Such was a common offer of campfire hospitality in the Old West. It was offered when a stranger had found the inviting light of your campfire – perhaps the only human companionship available within hundreds of miles.

I’ve written these moral, sometimes philosophical, stories of the good guys and the bad and those who we are hard pressed to distinctly place in either camp. Here are stories of romance and notional womenfolk and of youngsters coming of age. These stories are mixed with struggles, wins and disappointments, shoot-outs, good horses, agreeable dogs, camp smoke, ornery bovines and the unspoiled, wide-open country that was, and is, uniquely the American West. Join me as we savor this acknowledgment and celebration of the singular freedom and unparalleled opportunities of the American Cowboy Way that opened this vast land in an historic, unique and never-to-be-repeated, manner.
