Goin’ Home

Now, we all have our limit years
That’s tellin' a Biblical truth
One man lived close to a thousand
That was gettin’ long in the tooth

None of us live that long today
A few may make one hundred near
But that is the exception now
And yet, I have nothin' to fear

Now some may go due to illness
And some by old age or a fall
And some who die through tragedy
And some by too close of a call

None of us can predict the time
Or the hour when we will depart
Tryin' would just be foolhardy
In His time, God will stop a heart

So, who knows when I’ll be goin'?
The Lord God will select that day
But, I do know where I am goin'
And maybe I can pray the way

Describin' my trail to Heaven
And how it would look as I pass
Through a sunny azure Big Sky
Liftin' my trail off of the grass

For if I was given a choice
If I could pick the exact route
I’d choose a splendid beauty trail
Ridin’ horseback as I head out

On my ol' sorrel Alibi
My dog Mazie followin’ near
I’m singin’ "Precious Memories"
Lookin’ for Jesus to appear

Maybe there’d come a little fog
Through which I could just barely see
Those three crosses all beckonin’
Sayin’, “Come home now son to Me.”

And as I got just close enough
From behind the tall center cross
Out would step my precious Jesus
And then this greetin' He would toss

From His smilin’ radiant face
“You ran the race, from faith not strayed.”
His arms outstretched, “Welcome Cowboy.
Light and set. Your entrance is paid.”

This painting, by Jack Sorenson,  is the only reason I wrote this poem. When I saw it, the words just flowed.  Thanks, Jack
